Mike Henkelman – President & Director of Sports Medicine

Graduated from the University of British Columbia with a Bachelor of Science in Physical Therapy. During the course of his studies he was employed by the UBC Department of Athletics to work as a student trainer with varsity teams including football, basketball, volleyball, soccer, field hockey, and ice hockey. This extensive experience with collegiate athletics later led him to pursue his certification as an athletic trainer through the National Athletic Trainer’s Association (NATA). Mike later went on to attend the University of Indianapolis where he completed a post-graduate degree specializing in orthopedic physical therapy, and he has also completed a Doctor of Physical through A.T. Still University in Arizona. To complement his sports medicine practice previous obtained his certification as a strength and conditioning specialist though the National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA).
Mike’s career started at Rehability, where he worked in their outpatient and sports medicine clinics. He was then contracted to develop an on-site clinic for the Animal Training Department at SeaWorld of Florida. There he provided acute injury management and on site rehabilitation for the animal trainers, as well as developing injury prevention programs for this unique population of athletes.
Mike was a founding member of SST and now serves as the President and Director of Sports Medicine for the organization. Along with supervising the day to day operations for the company, he serves as the Coordinator of Clinical Education, works on new business development, and utilizes his expertise to provide patient care. He has been a guest lecturer for several physical therapy programs in the State of Florida. He has also been a presenter for the Athletic Trainers Association of Florida (ATAF), the Florida Physical Therapy Association (FPTA) as well as nationally for the American Physical Therapy Association (APTA).
His sports medicine experience has included working with many professional sports teams including a professional lacrosse team in Vancouver, providing care for the US Women’s National soccer team during their Florida residency for the 1999 Women’s World Cup, and working locally with Rollins College. He worked with Orlando Predators of the Arena Football League from 2000-2016, and Cirque du Soleil – La Nouba from 2003-2017. He continues to work with Lake Mary High School girls soccer and with the talent contracted with World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE). Mike was selected to be part of the medical team for the 2010 Winter Olympics which allowed him the opportunity to return home to Vancouver and provide care for athletes as they participated in the Olympic and Paralympic Games.
